Kids

May 4, 2012 in Uncategorized

I know its out of order, but today i’m blogging as I sit in anticipation of my baking Fleur de Sel Brownies. Yum! It’s a Ross kids home for the next few days, so we can eat brownies at midnight, ice cream for breakfast, and bake friends birthday cakes while we’re supposed to be at school…

Back to these potential midnight snack brownies-

As I stood at the kitchen counter about to begin baking, I got a request I simply couldn’t refuse- my two year old nephew approached me and asked, “what are you making?” Here’s the catch- I’m on doctor ordered voice rest for the next week. So rather than answer the poor kid I put on a big smile and pointed to the picture on the Brown Eyed Girl blog. He looks up at it and aks- “Is it delicious? Please I help?” My smile turned into an ear-to-ear grin and I gave him an overexxagerated nod while running to get his “mothers helper stool.”

Not only are these brownies made with a random renewed desire to bake, they’re made with all the different germs that a 2 year old boy has to offer. If these aren’t brownies made with love, I dunno what are.

The "Midnight" Snack

Yummm! So sweet and salty

Click me to see how cute I am!

Oh an since I’m already here, I might as well throw out the cake I made for my friend Meirav’s birthday. I’ll let you guess what it is….

BALA + BASF, together for the first time !

Our first Shabbaton in San Francisco and let me just say- most amazing Shabbaton of my life. Hopefully, this will lead to a long frindship between Bnei Akiva of San Francisco and Bnei Akiva of Los Angeles.

How do we prepare for this Shabbaton besides for spending hours planning the schedule, arranging transportation, and just putting everything together….baking with the Baras kids!

What cuties!

If you're going to San Franciscoooooo

Ok, so this has nothing to do with baking, but it’s just SOOO awesome!!

Yay to my cousin Galit Royker, the amazing photographer, and Eliott Khodari, the artistic director.

Check it out- were keeping it in the family (2 cousins, a brother, and a sister, and then some friends :) )

Summer Lovin’

October 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

This has gone on long enough! I made these cupcakes in JULY. Do you know how many months ago that was? Yes, this my friends, is a prime example of procrastination. Not that I don’t love blogging, but I’m in high school- starting to write makes me nervous. It’s only once I’ve started that I remember blogging is not at all like writing for English class and I actually enjoy doing it, but as we’ve seen here, that start could take months….

This past summer was a summer of firsts, namely, my first job. Don’t think I could have possibly had a cooler first job either. I don’t even know what kind of company to label Thinkwell as, and honestly, I don’t think most of the people working there could tell you either because they do evvverryytthinngg!! I guess I could say they’re a design and production/project management/multimedia company and they do some pretty spectacular projects. But enough advertising for Thinkwell Group, now I’m gonna do some advertising for the people who work there…

So you know those hipsters walking down Soho with their Urban Outiftters clothing and NYU textbooks in hand? Ya, they go to places like Thinkwell. Those traditional graphic designers who actually keep all of their layers separate and named in Photoshop? Them too….Literally EVERYONE- and that’s just the graphic design department that I was describing. (Don’t forget writing, editing, architecture, everything.) Now put all of these talented (and extremely likable) people in a warehouse-converted-art studio working on the world’s coolest projects- now who wouldn’t want to bake these people cupcakes?

Leave it to me to be the one to actually do it….

July 4th! My attempt at being patriotic- raspberry cupcakes with blue sour cream frosting. (With a taste of patriotic music from the desk next to mine)

Something thats NOT a cupcake! I know, I didn't think it was possible either.....(sweet potato biscuits with a cinnamon butter)

Whiskey cupcakes- who's the kid NOW, huh??

The New Girl In Town

August 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

She’s a girl scout. And she makes rockin’ Samoas.

Ok, so Maytal isn’t new in town, she’s actually my older sister who just graduated college so TECHNICALLY this is more her town than it is mine…but like I said, just a technicality. Shavuot came and went, as did any diets in the Jewish community. I mean, a holiday where you only eat dairy? Pshh…..well, at least I got to make a teeny little…dent wouldn’t be the right word…nick, in my “Food to Make” folder on my desktop! Here they are, the spectacular, scrumptious (,practically a whole days event) Samoas! (The question did come into my mind- when desserts look so perfect, doesn’t it start to take away a bit from the fact that they’re home made? you look down at them, and you feel, “you know, I could have been 10x smarter and just bought that from a cute little girl with braids at my front door….” Oh well, at least you can get satisfaction from telling people they’re homemade)

They're little doughnuts!

Cake pops for the Chai Lifeline bakesale :) Baking for a cause- you certainly can’t feel guilty for buying one of these…. And I finally got them right!

Nutterbutter Cake pops + Oreo Cake Pops....Do they make peanut butter oreos? If not, they really really should....

I Wish I Could Go Back To College

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

First off, a big Mazal Tov to my sister, Maytal, who just graduated from NYU as a nerd major math and economics major! She’s famous :)

Once again, while in New York, I found myself in the lovely Jenna Short’s kitchen. I ate muffins, I drew some pictures, and then I learned how to TAKE pictures! Jenna introduced me to the world of fancy cameras…my poor parents- who would have thought that sending me to work would make them LOSE money? But how else will my photos ever become blog-stalker worthy?? :)

Check me out through the link below! (And there’s a recipe included. I had reservations with my family for one of the fanciest Kosher restaurants in NY that night and I still had two bowls of the soup….in case you didn’t get the hint- go get some broccoli! NOW!)

My Friend, the Dictionary

Mel’s Kitchen Cafe

I made SAT cookies. I’m no SAT tutor- I don’t make 100 bucks a pop to teach kids how to cheat the system, but I’ve seen what cookies can do for people, and brownie points have got nothing on ‘em. Sat prep…*sigh* a time for chilling by the pool with some sweet shades and a killer book, namely, the dictionary. Seriously, I’ll give a cookie to anyone who can tell me what abrogate means. (without looking it up on dictionary.com) Oh well, I’m not really complaining, ever since I was little I’ve had a penchant for standardized testing (I think it’s the filling in the bubbles, sort of like coloring in the lines for big kids). Let’s see how this goes, shall we?

This is just the start to my huge folder called “Things to bake.” So here’s an SAT question of the day: If I’ve made 2 recipes out of about 50, and I make 1 recipe a week, how long will it take me to finish the folder?

Answer: A really really long time…(ok if you want a real answer, it’s a year. If only I didn’t keep adding new recipes to the file every History class…)

Vanilla Ice Cream

No, I didn’t bake this (it’s not even a baked good.) Yes, I know that’s against the rules. But hey, rules are made to be broken, no? Especially if I made them anyway….

This past weekend was my school’s Shabbaton with the theme “Simcha”- “Joy.” The weekend started with a video contest- “What does happiness mean to you?” Here’s mine and my friend Daniela’s video, reminding you that it’s the little things in life…
